About the talk

Menopause is a hormonally dynamic transition that often brings unexpected changes, including increased facial and body hair growth. This session will provide electrologists with a clinical understanding of the hormonal shifts that occur during perimenopause and menopause, and how these changes influence hair patterns and follicular behavior. Participants will learn to distinguish between common, expected hair growth and signs that may indicate underlying medical conditions requiring referral. The session will also review evidence-based medical and cosmetic treatment options, with a particular focus on the role of electrolysis as a safe and effective permanent solution. Emphasis will be placed on client counseling, cultural considerations, and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to support women navigating midlife changes with confidence and care.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Explain the hormonal changes associated with perimenopause and menopause and their impact on hair growth.

2. Identify common patterns of menopause-related facial and body hair and differentiate them from abnormal or concerning presentations.

3. Recognize signs and symptoms that warrant referral to a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

4. Describe current medical and cosmetic treatment options for managing unwanted hair growth, including the role of electrolysis.

5. Apply effective client counseling strategies that address both the physical and emotional aspects of menopause-related hair changes.

6. Support a collaborative care approach by working alongside healthcare providers to improve client outcomes.
